5 Signs Your Tree Is a Hazard (and What to Do About It)

Not all tree problems are obvious. But left unchecked, even healthy-looking trees can become safety risks. At Davis Land and Lawn, we specialize in hazardous tree removal across Kerrville and College Station—and we've seen firsthand how early action can prevent costly damage.

Here are five signs it’s time to give us a call:

1. Your Tree Leans or Has Shifted

A visible lean or sudden tilt can mean unstable roots—especially after a storm or heavy rain.

2. You Notice Cracks or Splits in the Trunk

These structural weaknesses can lead to collapse. Trees with “crack lines” in the bark or large limbs are often dangerous.

3. Dead or Hanging Branches

Dead limbs don’t just fall—they fall unexpectedly. If branches aren’t leafing out like they should, or you’ve got a widowmaker dangling above, it’s time to act.

4. Roots Are Exposed or Lifting

Raised soil, cracked sidewalks, or exposed root systems can signal that your tree isn’t anchored properly.

5. It’s Too Close to Structures or Power Lines

Even healthy trees become risky if they’re within a few feet of your roof, fencing, or power lines. High winds or ice can quickly turn them into a hazard.
